![]() ![]() ![]() The downside of this, however, is that there is next to no direction as to what to do next. As you can probably imagine, this means that there is quite a bit of gamer agency to play around with. Each land has at least one quest to complete, and most quests will reward you with at least one new artifact to place a new land and repeat the cycle. The basic loop is to place “lands” on different nodes of the world grid, which allows you to enter that land and interact with any cities or dungeons that might be in it. The gameplay is similar in structure, meaning it’s often difficult to understand and poorly explained, but not necessarily of poor quality. That is not to say that the storytelling is weak, however, as topics such as love, war, genocide, and persecution are all examined in ways that can be shockingly harsh. And while you can to tease out a ‘main’ quest over time, it’s so esoteric and airy that it can hardly be described as engaging. Legend of Mana plays more like a collection of loosely connected fairy tales all set in the same world and linked together in different thematic ways. Anyone expecting a typical RPG story (or even a “normal” story in general) will be bitterly disappointed. Given this non-linear approach, it is certainly advisable to approach Legend of Mana with an open mind. LEGEND OF MANA REMAKE REVIEW SERIESBy and large, there are three “arcs” of the story, but they can be experienced in any order and each consist of a series of side quests that can also be played in a very loose order. The story goes that centuries before the events of the Legend of Mana, the legendary mana tree burned to the ground, and the world of Fa’Diel was subsequently broken up into fragments called “artifacts” which were then scattered. You start out as a nameless, self-inserting character, and you are effectively tasked with doing this Create the world as you explore it. The Legend of Mana narrative is … confusing to say the least. Now, over twenty years later, and after remaking the 2019 Collection of Mana and the Trials of Mana remake the following year, Square has finally felt it right to bring this underdog classic back to light, and albeit many aspects of which still exist, it is unmistakably a very strange Game. Legend of Mana – the fourth entry in the series – was one of the earliest to be localized, but it had a mediocre response when it was released. Secret of Mana was widely considered to be one of the best RPGs of its time and continues to have some impact today, but many of the other titles either weren’t localized or came overseas years after their first release. It’s interesting to see how the Mana series has been treated by both Square and the public over the years. ![]() Recorded on Nintendo Switch (Handheld / Undocked) ![]()
